Registration/unregistration

  • How does the monthly subscription work?

    In a monthly subscription, you pay a fixed amount at the beginning of each month, regardless of the number of trips through the tunnel.


    Each monthly subscription is for one passenger car. If the car breaks down or is sold, you can change the car in the subscription by sending an e-mail to the customer service center.


    The subscription must be canceled before the 1st of each month and the termination will take effect from the beginning of the next month.


    An e-mail must be sent to veggjald@veggjald.is to apply for or cancel a monthly subscription.

  • How many prepaid trips can I have?

    You can have max 120 prepaid trips on each account.

  • Does it cost to register?

    No, registering through tunnel.is is free of charge.

  • How many vehicles can I register?

    You can register up to three vehicles under 3.5 tons and an unlimited number of vehicles that weigh 3.5 tons and over.

  • Who is responsible for the information registered through tunnel.is?

    Whoever registers through tunnel.is is responsible for providing accurate information.

  • Do I have to register before every trip?

    It does not matter if you travel often or rarely through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel, for travellers it offers the greatest convenience to register their vehicle and credit card information by setting up an account. A vehicle is only registered once through tunnel.is, after that the toll is charged automatically to the credit card provided, each time you travel through the tunnel. Registering through tunnel.is is free of charge.

  • What happens if a vehicle changes owners?

    If the ownership of a vehicle changes and/or other such changes occur, a registered user must deregister that vehicle through his account on tunnel.is. It is very simple to register another vehicle, the only information you have to provide is the licence plate number. These changes won’t affect pre-paid trips, as they are tied to the account of the user and not to individual vehicles.

  • What happend if you drive a vehicle through the tunnel that you do not own yourself?

    If a vehicle is registered through tunnel.is the toll will always be charged in accordance with its current registration within the system.  


    If a vehicle is not registered through tunnel.is the driver can pay for a single trip within 24 hours of driving through the tunnel. If no payment arrangement has been made within that time, the toll charge will be billed to the registered owner of the vehicle with an added collection fee.

  • Why does the system say my vehicle is already registered?

    The vehicle is already registered to a user in the system.

  • If I have a private license plate number should I register my vehicle with that or the original plate number?

    Always register the number that appears on your vehicle, be it the original or a private one.

  • How much does it cost to have a monthly subscription?

  • How much does it cost to drive through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel?

  • Are there discounts available?

    Registered users can purchase discounted trips. It is possible to save by pre-paying 10, 40 or 100 trips for any vehicle under 3.5 tons. The greater number of trips you buy the greater amount of money you save per trip.

  • Is there an extra charge for trailers, caravans or pop-up campers when the vehicle weighs less than 3.5. tons?

    No, there is no extra charge for trailers, caravans or pop-up campers.

  • Is there an extra charge for trucks with trailers?

    No, there is no extra charge for trailers.

  • What is the toll for campervans?

    Campervans are subject to the same standards as all other vehicles. If they weigh less than 3.5. tons they pay the same toll as all smaller cars. The Vehicle registration office provides information regarding the weight of vehicles.

  • Do you take American express card? Yes we do accept AMEX cards.


  • Do you take currency cards?

    No we do not accept currency cards.

Collection

  • How high is the collection fee?

    As of Nov 3, 2025, there is no collection fee on top of the wall fee, the single fee is the same whether paid at www.veggjald.is or a claim sent to online banking.

  • Is it possible to pay for vehicles you do not own?

    You do not have to be the owner of a vehicle to register it through tunnel.is. Registered users can decide which vehicles they want to register and can easily add more vehicles or remove them as they see fit.

  • What happens if I run out of pre-paid trips?

    If you run out of discounted pre-paid trips, each trip will be charged to the credit card registered to your account at the normal rate. Registered users can go to settings and ask to be notified when pre-paid trips are running low.

Foreign license plate

  • What rules apply to foreign drivers of cars with Icelandic registration plates?

    What rules apply to foreign drivers driving cars with Icelandic licence plates?

    They are subject to the same rules as other users. Everyone who travels through the tunnel must pay a toll. If the vehicle has not been registered through tunnel.is it is possible to pay for a single trip up to/but no later than three hours after traveling through the tunnel. If no action is taken the toll charge will be billed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

  • Is it possible to register foreign licence plate through tunnel.is?

    Yes, it is possible to register vehicles with foreign licence plates just as easily as those with Icelandic plates.

Motorcycle/bicycle

  • Is bicycling allowed in the Vaðlaheiði tunnel?

    No, bicycling is prohibited in the tunnel.

  • Do you have to pay a toll for motorcycles?

    No, motorcycles are allowed to drive through the tunnel without paying a toll.

About the tunnel

  • How high are the Vaðlaheiðar tunnels?

    The permitted height of vehicles through the tunnel is 4.2m.

  • Who owns the Vaðlaheiðar Tunnel?

  • What is the toll used for?

    Paying the loans used to finance the construction as well as the daily operation of the tunnel.

  • What is the maximum speed limit inside the tunnel?

    The maximum speed is 70 km/h. Automatic traffic cameras might photograph anyone in violation of traffic laws.

  • How long is the Vaðlaheiði tunnel?

    The total length of the tunnel is about 7.5 km.  The tunnel has two driving lanes, one in each direction.

Temporary account

  • Is it possible to drive back and forth with the same trip?

    No one trip through the tunnel is one trip. If you go back and forth you need to buy 2 trips.

  • What is the window of time to pay for a trip?

    You can pay for a single trip up to 24 hours before and 24 hours after driving through the tunnel

    If no action is taken or if a car goes through the tunnel after the 24 hours the toll charge will be billed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

  • What happens if a trip is paid but you do not travel?

    Your trip can not be refunded

  • When is my card charged?

    Your card is charged rigth away and one trip is registerd to the car.


    You will get an on screen confirmation about payment and can download receipt.


    This trip can not be refunded.
